I promote Environmental issues via
various social networking & also with my Talking
Product Videos. Regards the Print Industry, I had a major wake
up call some years ago, after attending a meeting, as a
representative of a firm called GBK Exacta. They were a firm
that replaced all the working parts of laser printer cartridges
& re-sold them.
They taught me a fact that still sticks in my
mind today. This was as follows:-
In
Europe alone, all the oil used in the plastic
to make the laser cartridges that we throw away
each year, would be enough to run 100,000 cars
a year
Obviously the Print industry has cleaned it's
act up considerably since those days. But it opened my
eyes and I started thinking more about how Printing affected
the Environment. I make sure that Spencer Print always use
Printer's that have ISO 14001 & Green Dragon Award
certification.
In addition, I also encourage other
Environmental practices in the Print Industry, such as
Biodegradable Lamination. A while ago I posted an article to
article directories about Cellogreen, a
bio degradable form of lamination for the Print industry. It
was picked up by companies in the USA who asked if I would be
an agent for the product in the USA.
Unfortunately, Celloglas, the company who made it have no
plans at present to export to the USA.
So many "Green" companies take the trouble to
use recycled papers in their brochures, only to negate the
benefit to the environment by using lamination on the
cover.
Spencer Print's main supplier on short to
medium runs uses a Anicolor Press. They have invested heavily
in the press, which, as well as saving paper, & thus
drastically reducing the print cost to the client, also has the
following advantages to the Environment:
1. The new Anicolor
press will save over 1.5 million sheets of
paper per year in reduced set up sheets. Their
competitors will use between 250 & 400
sheets of paper setting a job down to colour,
whereas the Anicolor Press only uses 15
sheets.
2. Due to
the 35% increased productivity of the machine
they therefore use less electricity to print
each job.
3. 1.5
million sheets of paper equates to
approximately 32 tonnes of paper. During the
manufacture of paper, each ton will need over
1000 litres of water to produce it, and enough
electricity to power a house for a
week.
In
addition, the heating in their factory utilises
Inverta technology, which is the most cost
effective way of heating a premise.
Lastly,
due to the fantastic suite of machines they
have, there will be 360 less trees that need to
be cut down every year!
Philosophy
Whether Global Warming is
man made, or due to external events inside or outside the solar
system, we cannot continue to exploit the planet we live
on, & it's indigenous people. I believe we are only tenants
of this planet & have a duty to leave a healthy world for
future generations.
